Creative Journey: Sketching, Movement and Flow

Creative Journey: Sketching, Movement and Flow

  • Sketching

My first blog on the creative journey.  Today I was with my brother, a fabulous artist who combines impressionism with his own style.  We were sketching in a three-hour figurative session as we do every week, side by side, when another artist came along to observe what we’d done.

  • Movement

She said, “Look at the movement he’s captured: this piece is so active.  That’s what I’m attempting to do …I’m sorry if this is your piece, but just for comparison, see how his has achieved fluidity, whereas yours…well, sorry….”  This lady may not have been tactful, but she had a point.

  • Flow

The key to any piece of art is its flow.  This is what I’ve learned from my brother over the past eight years. Although I might not achieve it with pastels, charcoal or conte crayons, pen and ink will get me there…in the writerly realm.  On my classic x-c skis or bicycle, rolling across the landscape or kayaking with wind and wave at my back, the flow vibrates with an energy that jumps outatcha!!  Hanging out with my brother, watching how his creativity airs is a privilege and an inspiration.

Which art form inspires you?  A jazz concert, an art exhibit, a walk on the seawall? Does it transfer to a project you’re working on?  Does it feed your muse and connect to your inner artist? Make this creative journey your own.
